Are you walking in a winter wonderland this holiday?

We have our own version around Destin.

Here the wonderland is just as white, but there are no frozen tundras to navigate as you move about the scene.

Downy white sand beaches. Emerald blues and greens. Twinkling clear waters. Breathtaking reds and golds found by sunset.

This is what our wonderland looks like.

What makes the sand in Destin so pristine and white?

Among the most consistently white beach sand in the world, our beaches are actually covered in small quartz particles that travel to the Gulf of Mexico from the Appalachian Mountains and the Apalachicola River at the end of the last Ice Age.

Water from melted ice caps 20,000 years ago carried these beautiful little quartz particles hundreds of miles from the rock that forms the Appalachian Mountains. Deposited in the Gulf of Mexico, the quartz sands eventually formed our stunning shoreline.

The sands today continually replenish from the sea, keeping our beaches the gleaming bright white so popular in the postcards of a bygone era and the Instagram feeds of today.

Sugar white, squeaky-clean sand. It cools your feet without freezing them!

Now that is something to wonder at!

It is the bedding to our dreamy beach wonderland that has caused many a visitor to swoon at the picture postcard perfect vistas that give new meaning to the idea of a White Christmas!

Our unique sand is one of the main reasons our beaches are among the most beautiful in the world.
