Beach Safety on Spring Break

While vacationing at The Sea Oats Motel in Destin you are so busy having fun that you might not be as careful as you should.

Here are a few tips and reminders to keep you and your family safe. Avoid being outside near water during storms. If you hear thunder it could be followed by lightning. Lightning can be deadly.

Swim sober. Don’t swim alone. Don’t dive headfirst into swimming pool or shallow water which could result in neck injuries.

Make sure to stay hydrated when in the sun for long periods of time. If you are playing sports such as volleyball, taking long walks etc, on the beach, drink plenty of water or Gatorade. Drinking alcohol such as beer quenches your thirst but you may not realize you are getting drunk if using to quench your thirst. Drinking water or Gatorade will help you stay hydrated.

Beach volleyball can be a lot of fun but check the area for holes to prevent players from accidentally hurting themselves while playing.

Before you swim at the beach check conditions. Watch for warning flags.

Look out for rip currents. If you get caught in a rip current be sure to stay calm and don’t fight the current. Swim parallel to the shore until you are safely out of the current then turn and swim towards the shore. If you can’t swim, float or tread until you get to the shore.

The Sea Oats Motel is the last of its kind beachfront motel. We are steps from the most gorgeous beaches in the world.
